THE ROAR RETURNS
It is official! After a heartbreaking closure in 2021, the historic Atlanta
Dragway in Commerce, Georgia, is officially being brought back to life.
For the past few years, the 318-acre property has sat quiet, its iconic tower and grandstands gone.
But the silence is finally over. The return of this beloved drag strip is about to bring a massive wave
of economic growth and excitement right to our backyard!
The Ultimate Comeback Story
Originally opened in 1976 on land graded for an airport, the Atlanta Dragway has long been a
cornerstone of our community's identity. When the NHRA sold the property in 2021, many feared
racing in Commerce was gone forever. Thankfully, the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA)
has officially acquired the facility with a commitment to restoring its legacy.
The community rallied behind this revival, and the Banks County Board of Commissioners recently
voted unanimously to approve the track's long-awaited comeback. In a nod to our local values, cars
won't hit the track before noon on Sundays to respect local church services, a perfect compromise
for a community-focused revival.
A Massive Win for Our Local Economy
This isn't just news for motorsports fans; it is an incredible economic catalyst. Historically,
major events at the Dragway, like the Southern Nationals, brought between 30,000 and
50,000 visitors annually, while swap meets drew in around 25,000 people.
With the IHRA planning to host major national events, starting with the Outlaw Nitro Series
World Finals in October 2026, we are about to see a tremendous ripple effect across the
I-85 corridor.
What This Means for Real Estate
Whenever a region experiences this kind of job creation, tourism boom, and economic investment,
the local real estate market is the first to feel the positive impact. The revitalization of the Atlanta
Dragway is going to make Commerce and the surrounding Banks County area an even more highly
sought-after place to live, work, and invest.
We anticipate three major trends:
Rising Property Values: Increased demand for housing as the local economy
strengthens.
Short-Term Rental Goldmine: A surge in demand for racing fans looking for a place
to stay during event weekends.
Commercial Growth: New businesses moving in to support the influx of thousands
of tourists.
