Things to Do for Mother's Day

Mother's Day is a day that is specifically commemorated to celebrate the bond shared between a mother and her children—celebrated on the second Sunday of May when children, young and grown, can pay homage and show gratitude to their mothers for everything they've done for them.

Anna Jarvis first held a memorial for her mother in 1908 and started a campaign to recognize Mother's Day as a holiday to show gratitude towards all moms. If you're in Georgia and you're wondering what you can do to make this day memorable for your mother, there are plenty of things to consider, such as special brunches, marathons, painting events, and much more!

Here are some of the many things that you can do in some of the cities in Georgia:

Commerce

Located in Jackson County, the city of Commerce has a rich history that dates back to the turn of the century and includes a close-knit community and no shortage of entertainment. There are plenty of things that you can do in the city:

Indulge in a Mother's Day Lunch at the Longhorn Steakhouse

Head to Bold Springs Road, just off Highway 441S, before you come across the Longhorn Steakhouse, with rustic inviting exteriors. Walking in, you will come across charming decor displayed on the walls and cozy booths where you can enjoy a meal with your mother. Indulge in authentic American cuisine, delicious steaks, and gluten-free options. Don't forget to try their lobster shrimp bisque, steak, and mac and cheese. They also have a bar where you can try out their unique cocktails and mocktails.

Stop by the Red Hound Antique Market

Located on Pottery Factory Drive in Commerce, the Red Hound Antique Market is an antique mall spread out over 55,000 square feet. If your mother is a fan of antiques and vintage collectibles, drop by here and spend a day letting her browse while enjoying your company. The collections here are updated regularly and are scattered across charming furniture in multiple rooms that will draw you in. Buy your mother some of the items that she likes, and if you're hungry, drop by the Koji Japanese Restaurant, just a short walk away offering sushi and Japanese cuisine.

Catch a Movie at the Commerce Cinema

Commerce Cinema is the local theatre that draws in residents throughout the week and is often packed during the weekend. Located on Banks Crossing Drive, this charming little cinema may be on the smaller side, but it does have a friendly staff that keeps the cinema clean and comfortable. Stop by on Mother's Day for a special discount on the snacks and spend the day out watching your new favorite movie. They show some of the latest movies here and repeat special premieres.

Jefferson

Located in Jackson County, the city of Jefferson is quaint and quiet but provides access to nearby amenities that can provide you with everything you need. However, if you're looking for things to do here on Mothers Day, here are some of your options:

Get Your Mother Ready to Fly!

The company Atlanta Sport Flying is located in the heart of Jefferson and offers the opportunity to control the aircraft on your ride! They provide tours around the city, with scenic views of the Georgia mountains and Lake Laniers. If your mom is adventurous, take her on a tour she will never forget. Experience the best of Georgia from 5,000 feet and control the aircraft as it ascends, descends, and turns over the lush greenery of Georgia. Don't forget to wear something warm, because it can get quite chilly when you're up in the clouds!

Picnic at the Jefferson City Park!

This beautiful city park is located at 1217 Bryanwood Drive and provides the perfect opportunity to picnic with your mother and possibly the entire family! Apart from having a lot of open green ground, the little pond nearby is home to ducks and their adorable little ducklings and is surrounded by beautiful American Beech Trees. Spread out your picnic blanket here, and relax in the sun or heat to the pond for boating, or take a stroll down to the Jefferson Clubhouse. There is also a baseball field for kids, along with a kids' slide and playground.

Explore the Crawford W Long Museum

If your mother is a history lover, take her to the Crawford W Long Museum, where she can spend the day learning about the educational exhibits on the life of Dr. Crawford Long, the first physician to use ether as anesthesia. There are plenty of tours that take place here. However, the Ghost Tour packs a lot of fun, where the tour takes you through the museum and to the cemetery nearby. Learn about the city's history before heading to the nearby Cream and Shuga coffee shop for refreshments after a tiring and eventful day.

Athens

The city of Athens in northeast Georgia is well-known for its affluent historic war towns and antebellum architecture spread out over the many buildings. Athens has no shortage of fun things to do, whether you're into drinking and relaxing or checking out the historic district. Here are some of your options:

Spend the Day at the State Botanical Garden of Georgia

While this picturesque botanical garden is not half the size of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, it still has plenty to offer. Spread over 313 acres, this spot is the perfect place to unwind for the day. There usually isn't much of a crowd here, and the admission is free. Spend the day smelling the fresh daisies or partake in their many fun events to spread the greenery.

Meet the Bears at Bear Hollow Zoo

While you may want to spend time with animals, you can also do this here but from afar. The animals here aren't your typical animals. Instead, they have some behavioral challenges that wouldn't allow them to survive in the wild. Some of the many animals you may come across here include bears, bobcats, and owls.

Indulge in Delicious Food

Take a food tour and hit up some of the local spots for delicious food. Some of the many options you have include The Grill for a retro dining experience and the Last Resort Grill for grilled meat and seafood. Head to the National for Mediterranean cuisine and unique dishes and drinks.
